Dualit's classic toasters are a design icon. Built for commercial use, they have since won numerous consumer accolades and come in a range of variants, sizes and colours. From the Vario to the more specialised Sandwich, Combi, Lite and Bun toasters, they all share the same timeless styling, reliability and Dualit design features. Engineered to produce the best toast in the world, Dualit toasters are still built by hand in the UK, with the assembler's stamp on every base plate. So whether you're a toast aficionado at home, or a professional caterer needing to produce 80 toasted sandwiches an hour, we can guarantee that one of the Dualit toasters will be perfect for you.
Max Gort-Barten came to Britain from Germany just as the Second World War broke out and purchased a small factory in Camberwell. It was here that he began work on a few of his early ideas and ambition to utilise his engineering skills and creativity to manufacture products. A few of his first ideas included the Dual-Light electric fire from which Dualit took its name, but it was a patented toaster that caught people's attention.
He began concentrating on the commercial market and in 1952 created the first ever 6 slice toaster with a built in timer which bears a striking resemblance to today's Vario toaster! It wasn't until the 1970s that Dualit were given a grant to employ a Royal College of Art design graduate. Export incentives prompted Max and his son Leslie to exhibit at foreign trade shows. And consumer demand for professional kitchen appliances suddenly led retailers like John Lewis to stock Dualit products.
When the Dualit toaster became the must-have kitchen appliance of the '80s, the company was swamped by an insatiable demand and was forced to extend the factory twice over and find ways of increasing its manufacturing capacity. In 2003, the same year that Max Gort-Barten died, the company outgrew its original home in the Old Kent Road and moved to new premises in Crawley, West Sussex. Dualit today is one of a handful of successful, independently-owned British manufacturers. Reliable, well-engineered products remain at the heart of the company and there is an instantly recognisable and now nostalgically retro Dualit aesthetic which can be traced back to Max's first toaster designs in the 1950s.
Dualit toasters are recognised as the best in the world and with every part replaceable, they really are a toaster for life. The patented ProHeat toaster element uses the latest technology to ensure perfect toasting and if you're not ready to collect your toast, it'll stay in the slots and keep warm thanks to the stay-warm manual ejector. The traditional design is available in the standard Vario toasters and Combi toasters, which include sandwich cages for making delicious toasties! Dualit toasters are part of a range that includes the popular Dualit kettles, Espressivo coffee makers and other quality Dualit small electricals for your kitchen and home. (UK Warranty only!)
